Neighborhood Guide to Spotting Fall Color in the Sacramento Area
New England may get all the attention when it comes to fall color, but the greater Sacramento area isn’t without its impressive fall displays, either. Come fall, the region transforms into a patchwork of gold, crimson, and amber. Although some of the best spots to find fall color are in outlying areas and higher elevations, more developed urban and suburban areas have their own striking shows. In other words, you don’t have to travel far to go leaf peeping in the Sacramento area — you can do so right in your own backyard.
In Northern California, the arrival of fall color depends on elevation and nighttime temperatures. Leaves start to change at the highest elevations first, gradually making their way down the mountains, into the foothills, and finally, into the valley. In the High Sierra, for example, aspen groves begin to turn as early as September. But further down, it’s not until mid-October that the oaks, maples, and ornamental trees start taking on shades of orange and yellow. In the Sacramento Valley, the peak season tends to be late October to early November, as sycamores, walnuts, and cottonwoods turn.
Following are some of the best neighborhoods in Sacramento, Yolo, El Dorado, and Placer counties to spot fall color.
Sacramento County
Land Park, Midtown, and East Sacramento. The city of Sacramento’s older neighborhoods are a hotspot for fall color. Land Park, Midtown, and East Sacramento are known for their established tree canopies. A stroll through any of these neighborhoods in late October and November are sure to deliver with showy ornamental trees such as Chinese pistache, gingko, and redbud.

Historic Folsom. Established in the 1800s, the historic district of this growing city is lined with ornamental trees that put on fiery displays come autumn.
