Sacramento’s New Beast + Bounty: A Paradise for Carnivores + Herbivores Alike
Pleasing both the vegetarian and steak-obsessed person in your party can be a difficult task when dining out as a group. Beast + Bounty makes that juxtaposition a reality with an abundance of vegetable-forward dishes and hearty meat-centric options as well. In their words, “gone are the days of choosing where to eat because of what you eat.” At last, this diverse restaurant is the common denominator for carnivores and herbivores, or the “beast-eaters” and “bounty-lovers.”
Beast + Bounty is one of the newest additions in Ice Blocks, a vibrant mixed-use retail/residential space in Midtown. Beast + Bounty is the first restaurant to open in Ice Blocks, which is also home to a number of shops and various businesses, plus a brand new apartment complex. The reception thus far has been positive, and it’s hard to tell if it’s because of the creative dishes or the jaw-dropping interior.

In fact, the restaurant’s opening date was later than expected to ensure the interior design was absolutely perfect. And it really is! Beast + Bounty boasts a minimalist, modern and slightly Art Deco feel — featuring blush, hunter green and gold details, herringbone white oak floors, lots of lush terracotta planters filled with greenery, sleek black marble countertops, and soaring ceilings with exposed wood beams.
Diners reside in an extremely airy space between the bar and the open kitchen with a wood-fired oven. The comfortable bench seating features charming belt and buckle details and the chairs on the opposite side of each table were custom made. The south wall of the restaurant is the former brick wall for Orchard Supply Co., which inhabited the same footprint as Beast + Bounty in a building dating back to 1947.

The exterior of the restaurant is equally as enchanting. Beast + Bounty is accompanied by an outdoor patio with plenty of seating in the shade, plus a bocce ball court with string lights hanging overhead. This has become a fun space to lounge and mingle, play bocce, and wait for your table to be ready or enjoy a post-dinner drink.
Now that we’ve set the scene, let’s set the table. Because after all, the menu at Beast + Bounty has received as much praise as its Instagram-worthy atmosphere.

Beast + Bounty is owned by renowned restaurateur Michael Hargis and chef Brock Macdonald of LowBrau and Block Butcher Bar. The two have masterfully crafted a unique carnivore- and herbivore-friendly menu, most of which is focused on the wood-fired and coal grill guests can see from their table.
Options on the herbivore-friendly “bounty” menu include roasted carrots, seared potatoes, cast-iron cauliflower, charred broccoli and yam, and blistered shishitos. “Beast” options include a 60-day dry aged ribeye, a 28-day wet aged ribeye, roasted double cut pork chop, half chicken from the hearth, grilled salmon, or a mixed grill, which features a mix of meat options to share. The “all day” menu features a selection of ramen, pizzas, and burgers, including both a beast (read: beef) and bounty (read: vegan) burger. Plus, choose from a selection of starters to share as a table, including an exceptional charred octopus and a delicious bread served with house-cultured butter made with smoked sea salt.

The cocktail program at Beast + Bounty is equally as refined as its eclectic menu. The bar focuses on craft cider, wine and creative cocktails, including the smoky Tobacco Old Fashioned made with Rittenhouse Rye and the refreshing Princess and the Pea with St-Germain elderflower liqueur.
The future is bright for Beast + Bounty, as they recently began serving lunch and plan to expand to breakfast and brunch in the days ahead. The lunch menu, which features a few dinner mainstays plus an array of fresh salads and sandwiches, is now served Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Whether you’re there for lunch, dinner or drinks, Beast + Bounty will delight and impress — from the colorful food on your table to the mesmerizing decor.
Reservations are highly recommended for this popular Midtown hotspot. Follow Beast + Bounty on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for updates as they continue to expand and grow!
