Where to Spend a Spring Day in the Sacramento Area
Spring is undoubtedly one of the best times of year to get outside in the greater Sacramento region. The heat of summer hasn’t arrived yet and the chill of winter has passed. The hillsides are green, the trees are lush, and the flowers are blooming. Allergies aside, there’s really no reason not to spend some time outdoors in springtime!
There are plenty of ways to take in the spring vibes, whether you prefer active pursuits or simply want a mellow spot to relax. Hiking and walking trails are within easy reach, some with spectacular showings of wildflowers. Some even have impressive waterfalls, which are at full capacity this time of year. Or, for something more mellow, you can have a picnic at an area park or explore what’s in bloom at area gardens and nurseries. Whatever your preference, there are plenty of great places where you can spend a spring day in the Sacramento area.
Wildflower & Waterfall Hikes Near Sacramento

Buttermilk Bend Trail | Auburn
Poppies, lupine, and buttercups are just a few of the wildflowers you’ll see on this popular hike in the Auburn State Recreation Area. It’s not a long trail, just over a mile out and back, but it packs a punch. In addition to the impressive wildflowers, it also offers stellar views of the South Yuba River, as the trail hugs the river’s edge for most of its length. There are guided hikes through mid-May, and you can explore the restored historic covered bridge at the trailhead.
Hidden Falls | Auburn
Whether you’re hiking with kids or with dogs, Hidden Falls Regional Park in Auburn is a great spring hike. There are more than 30 miles of multi-use trails throughout the park, all with different levels of difficulty. The trail to the falls itself is easily doable and you’ll be rewarded with a spectacular view of the rushing falls from a viewing platform. Other trails have views of the rolling, oak-studded hillsides, and wildflowers are on full display. Note: Parking reservations are required on weekends.

North Table Mountain | Oroville
No discussion of wildflower hikes in Northern California is complete without mention of this beautiful natural area near Oroville. Green, rolling hills are laced with vernal streams and pools, poppies, lupine, and other wildflowers blanket the landscape, and there’s even a cow or two to say hi. If you prefer a longer hike, you can continue to Phantom Falls, a spectacular show with spring runoff plummeting over the basalt mesa. The out-and-back hike to the falls clocks in at around 4 miles. Dogs are allowed and a land pass is required.

William Land Park | Sacramento
Located in Sacramento’s Land Park neighborhood, this large park has everything you need for a springtime picnic. There are tons of picnic tables and barbecues, plus numerous grassy areas if you prefer to spread out on a blanket. There’s also a historic rock garden with colorful flowers and blooming trees, including many California natives.
Henningsen Lotus Park | Lotus
This scenic area in the El Dorado County Town of Lotus is a great spot for a spring picnic. It sits along the edge of the South Fork of the American River, offering great views of the river canyon. There are picnic tables and shade structures, and you can even bring your own grill. It’s especially beautiful in spring when the trees are blossoming.
Dry Creek Community Park | Roseville
This expansive park in Roseville is a great spot for a springtime picnic. They have barbecues and picnic tables, plus a playground for the kiddos. Perhaps best of all, there’s creek access and a mellow walking path that’s loaded with wildflowers in the spring.

The Best Flower Gardens in the Sacramento Area

Jensen Botanical Garden | Carmichael
Nestled along the American River, this lush garden is known for its colorful blooms, especially in spring. It’s a tranquil retreat with ponds and winding paths. It’s especially popular for its stunning display of tulips, which emerge in spring.
UC Davis Arboretum | Davis
Located in Davis, this 100-acre public garden and arboretum hugs the banks of Putah Creek. It’s home to demonstration gardens with plants from around the globe, as well as native California plants. There’s a 3.5-mile trail through the arboretum and you can do as little or as much as you like. They also hold plant sales on select days in spring, so you can take home a piece of the garden with you.

Perched above Nevada City, this striking garden is part of Ananda Village, a cooperative spiritual community and retreat center. It’s a tranquil, peaceful place with meditation areas, pathways, and quiet spaces designed for reflection. The main draw here are the vibrant displays of tulips that erupt in the spring.
