Easy Winter Day Trips Within Two Hours of Sacramento
Winter blues got you down? Nothing cures the cold-weather doldrums like a change of scenery. And while skiers and snowboarders may be living their best life at the many ski resorts near Sacramento, others may be seeking refuge away from the crowds and traffic that the Tahoe region brings. Still, that doesn’t mean hibernating all winter. There are plenty of destinations in Northern California that make for a great day trip. Whether you’re craving a coastal escape, a wine country retreat or a Gold Country getaway, there are plenty of places to explore. Best of all, most are within a two-hour drive of Sacramento. Following are our top choices.

Point Reyes, CA
Point Reyes
With its windswept beaches, lush hiking trails, and epic views, Point Reyes National Seashore makes for a great winter getaway. Highlights include an iconic lighthouse, an impressive cypress tree tunnel, and a historic shipwreck. If the weather is cooperative, there are numerous hiking trails in the region, most with dramatic views of the coastline. There’s also a tule elk preserve for those looking to get in some wildlife viewing. Along the way, stop by Point Reyes Farmstead Cheese Company for some cheese tasting or Tomales Bay Oyster Company for some of the freshest oysters around.

Plymouth
If you’re looking for a wine country getaway this winter away from the hustle and bustle of Napa and Sonoma, consider a visit to the Amador County town of Plymouth. Known as the Gateway to the Shenandoah Valley, Plymouth is less than an hour from Sacramento but seems a world away. Rolling green hillsides, acres upon acres of vineyards, and rustic tasting rooms make for an ideal setting. Some wineries to consider include Andis, Di Arie, and Helwig, all of which offer the region’s signature Zinfandel varietal. If that’s not enough, head further afield to Volcano to explore Black Chasm Cavern or Indian Grinding Rock State Historic Park. Finish off your trip with a meal at Taste, which offers modern, farm-to-table dining.

Downieville, CA
Downieville
If you’re craving a winter wonderland but don’t want to deal with the chaos that is Tahoe, head further north to the historic town of Downieville. Located along Highway 49, the drive there is especially spectacular, with views of the North Yuba River. The town itself is a well-preserved Gold Rush town with historic buildings and plenty of charm. If you’re so inclined, the region is known for its many snowshoeing and cross-country skiing trails. Further along Highway 49, you can take the kiddos sledding at the Yuba Pass Sno-Park. After hours, hit up one of the many quaint eateries in town, including Boomtown Lounge, which offers barbecue, beer, wine, and live music along with Old West vibes.
Winters
The aptly named town of Winters in Yolo County makes for a fun day trip in the off season. It has a quaint, walkable downtown with historic buildings, charming shops, and farm-to-table restaurants. The town is known for its up-and-coming wine scene, and there are two tasting rooms: Berryessa Gap Vineyards and Turkovich Family Wines. There’s also a distillery nearby, Patio 29, which produces a variety of craft spirits. If you’re looking to explore the outdoors, you can stroll the trails within the Putah Creek Nature Park. Before you head home, consider a meal at Preserve, a contemporary spot that highlights the seasonal bounty of area farms and ranches.

Pacifica, CA
Pacifica
The quiet coastal town of Pacifica, just south of San Francisco, is a popular destination for beachcombers, ocean lovers, and whale watchers. Its namesake beach offers sweeping ocean views, and there are also tidepools at its northern end. Hiking trails crisscross the bluffs overlooking the ocean, and there are several notable lookout points along the shore, including Mori Point, Aramai Point and Pedro Point. Bring your binoculars — you can often spot gray whales along their annual migration route. Another good whale watching spot is the Pacifica Pier, which also attracts sea lions and is a popular spot for fishing, crabbing, and sunset viewing. No trip to Pacifica is complete without a seafood meal, so consider a visit to Nick’s for their signature crab sandwich. Or, if you’re on a budget, head to the infamous oceanfront Taco Bell Cantina, an upscale fast-food joint with million dollar views.

Calaveras Big Trees State Park
Arnold
Arnold is a classic mountain town, with forested scenery, fresh air, and a laid-back vibe. It’s home to Calaveras Big Trees State Park, a four-season playland built around two historic groves of giant sequoia. Popular for hiking and camping in summer, it’s also a choice destination for snowshoeing in winter. Further up the hill are several California sno-parks, as well as Bear Valley Mountain Resort, a low-key spot for skiing and snowboarding. Before you go, be sure to grab a beer and a burger at the Lube Room Saloon, or stop by Hinterhaus Distilling, a friendly spot known for their craft cocktails.
