Waterfront Parks to Explore This Summer in the Greater Sacramento Area

The greater Sacramento area is smack dab in the middle of some of the most beautiful natural landscapes in Northern California. In the east, there are the Sierra Nevada and its foothills. To the west and south is the California Delta. And in the center of it all are the Sacramento and American rivers, which provide ample opportunities for outdoor recreation, from hiking and biking to swimming and boating.

Sure, you could head out and find a hidden swimming hole, but sometimes it’s nice to find a designated recreation area where you can picnic, barbecue, and set up for the day, especially if you have little ones in tow. Luckily, the Sacramento region has plenty of waterfront parks, many with amenities, so you can enjoy the area’s natural beauty and still have a few creature comforts. Following are some options.

William B. Pond Recreation Area | Sacramento

Nestled along the American River near the Arden Arcade area of Sacramento, this waterside park is popular for its large fishing pond stocked with trout and catfish. There are pathways through the riverside landscape, as well as grassy lawn areas and picnic tables. It connects with the American River Bike Trail, so many visitors arrive by bike. Walk over the bridge for scenic water views and you’ll end up in River Bend Park, which is a popular take-out spot for rafters. River Bend also has hiking and equestrian trails and picnic areas.

Granite Bay/Beals Point | Granite Bay

Located on the western shores of Folsom Lake, Granite Bay and Beals Point are the quintessential lakeside parks. There are barbecue areas, grassy lawns, and picnic tables, making them ideal spots for family gatherings. Both have water access and Granite Bay has a sandy beach. They both rent beach equipment, such as shade canopies, rafts, and paddleboards. At Granite Bay, be sure to visit Anchored Eats, a waterside eatery with burgers and snow cones.

 Sly Park | Pollock Pines

Sly Park Recreation Area, otherwise known as Jenkinson Lake, is a forest-rimmed reservoir near Pollock Pines in El Dorado County. It offers numerous recreational opportunities, including boating, fishing, and hiking. For day use, there are picnic areas throughout the area, plus beaches for swimming and paddling. Note: No dogs are allowed in the water at Sly Park.

It’s a great spot for canoeing, kayaking, fishing and swimming, or just relaxing with a picnic. There’s also a campground if you’d like to make a weekend of it. Keep your eyes peeled for peacocks — they’re known to roam the area!

 Nimbus Flat | Rancho Cordova

Hugging the shore of Lake Natoma, Nimbus Flat is a popular spot for paddlers, with a dedicated put-in area for kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. It’s also conveniently located next to the Sac State Aquatic Center for those who need to rent a vessel. There’s direct water access with a rocky beach and cement stairs to the water, popular for families. There are also picnic tables. Plus, it connects with the American River Bike Trail.

 Hidden Falls | Auburn

This expansive regional park in Auburn is perhaps best known for its miles upon miles of trails for hiking and biking. Its namesake trail leads you to a waterfall with a viewing platform, but further upstream there’s a great little swimming hole, perfect for cooling off on a hot day. There are several creeks and streams to explore, with numerous access points and waterside picnic facilities. Note: Parking reservations are required in advance and the park will close on days of extreme fire danger.

 Henningsen Lotus Park | Lotus

Nestled along the South Fork of the American River in the town of Lotus, this scenic park is a great spot for summer fun. There is a boat launch and beach area, plus barbecue grills, picnic tables, and a playground for the little ones. Plus, it’s dog-friendly!

Summer is a great time to relocate. Thinking of Sacramento? Let us help.

Cache Creek Regional Park | Rumsey

Located in the northwestern part of Yolo County in the town of Rumsey, Cache Creek Regional Park features hundreds of acres of natural woodlands. There are several access points in the park; the upper day use park area has rural access to Cache Creek and is popular with rafting vendors. The middle site features a campground, also with creek access. The lower day use area also provides creek access and is the starting point for many rural hiking trails.

 Black Miner’s Bar | Folsom

At the northern end of Lake Natoma is Black Miner’s Bar, a shady park with direct access to the water. There’s a small but popular beach, covered picnic areas, and barbecues. Many paddlers put in here and head north toward Folsom Lake. Near the Rainbow Bridge, there are large granite outcroppings that are perfect for sunbathing and jumping into the cold water below. It connects with the American River Bike Trail, which has a bridge spanning the water that offers great views. If you’re paddling, you can head as far as “The Wire,” a turn-around point at the boundary of Folsom State Prison.

Auburn State Recreation Area | Auburn

Near the confluence of the Middle and North forks of the American River, there are numerous access points for swimming, sunbathing, hiking, and whitewater rafting. Although the currents are typically too strong in the early summer to brave the water, they typically mellow out (and warm up) as the weeks go by. You can hike to Lake Clementine Dam and watch the water gush over the spillway, bring your boat to Lower Lake Clementine to fish, or head to Upper Lake Clementine to paddle and relax on the rocky beach.

Brown’s Ravine | El Dorado Hills

With a marina and a boat launch, it’s unsurprising that Brown’s Ravine is popular with boaters. There’s also a marina shop selling snacks and beverages. There are picnic areas and barbecues, and you can access the water to swim or paddle via nearby Hobie Cove.

 Garcia Bend Park | Sacramento

Located in Sacramento’s Pocket neighborhood, Garcia Bend Park has all the elements of any suburban park: a playground, grassy playing fields, picnic areas, and pickleball courts. But it also has access to the Sacramento River. There are trails along the shoreline offering water views as well as a beach area popular with kids. There’s also a boat launch ramp.
