The Best Pilates Studios in the Sacramento Area

Don’t know the difference between a double leg stretch and a teaser? A pelvic curl and a roll-up? Then consider taking a Pilates class! Pilates offers a low-impact, full-body workout that improves both strength and flexibility. Best of all, there are Pilates studios throughout the greater Sacramento area.

But first, a brief description of what Pilates is (and isn’t). Pilates was developed in the early 1900s by German-born boxer and fitness instructor Joseph Pilates. He created a series of exercises and exercise equipment that were used in rehabilitation, which later grew into a functional fitness movement. And, contrary to popular belief, Pilates isn’t yoga. It isn’t stretching. And it isn’t just for your core.

There are two main types of Pilates: mat Pilates, in which exercises are done on the floor using body weight, and Reformer Pilates, which is done on a machine. Classical Pilates incorporates the original exercises, while many modern studios use movements influenced by other methodologies. The greater Sacramento area has studios that vary greatly in the type of Pilates they offer, from those with a rehabilitation focus to those with fast-paced, hot Pilates. Following are some studios to check out.

  • Reformer: A bed-shaped machine with a sliding carriage, springs, straps, and a footbar to build strength, flexibility, and control through resisted movement.
  • Cadillac: Also known as a trapeze table, it has a metal frame with hanging springs, bars, and straps. It is used for rehabilitation, spinal mobility, and both supported and advanced exercises.
  • Pilates Chair: Also known as a Wunda Chair, it is a compact piece of equipment that resembles a chair with a spring-loaded pedal. It is used in both seated and standing positions.
  • Ladder Barrel: A curved barrel attached to ladder rungs that is primarily used for spinal articulation, stretching, backbends, and improving posture and flexibility.
  • Arc Barrel: A lightweight, curved foam prop used for spinal support, extension, and flexibility work.
  • Tower: Either mounted to a Reformer or a wall, a tower is a spring system that incorporates straps and bars for resistance.
  • Jumpboard: Not a separate piece of equipment but a wooden board that is placed at the end of a Reformer, allowing the user to “jump” while on their back for a dose of cardio.
