Fall Into Organization: A Simple Reset for a Calmer Season

Fall is here, along with a slight chill in the air, which is the perfect time to reset your home for the coming seasons and holidays. It’s best to plan ahead now instead of waiting until the chaos of the holiday season. As a professional organizer, some resets I recommend making at this time of year are with your clothing, your guest and kids’ bedrooms/toy rooms, and kitchens.

Switching out your Clothing

Switching out your cooler-weather clothing for your warmer-weather clothing in the fall is a great time to analyze your wardrobe. Are particular clothing items showing wear and tear, don’t fit right, don’t make you feel your best, or never get worn? Perhaps it’s time to let them go to make space for the pieces you love! Consider these questions as you switch tank tops for sweaters, flip flops for boots, and shorts for long pants.

Also, if anything needs to be dry-cleaned, have that done before storing it. Pro tip: Remove the plastic dry cleaning bags when you bring your clothing home, as the plastic can damage your clothes.

Declutter Bedrooms

If you plan on hosting guests over the holidays, do your guest bedrooms need to be decluttered? Often, these rarely used rooms become dumping grounds for excess household items that don’t have a home. Along with decluttering your guest bedrooms, this is a great time to declutter toy rooms or children’s bedrooms before the influx of new toys that usually accompany the holidays.

Use this opportunity as a learning experience for older children in the decluttering process and to remind them that their toys may be a blessing to another child.

Reset your Kitchen

Finally, if you plan on doing holiday cooking and baking, this is the time to declutter and reset your kitchen. Whether it’s getting rid of expired food in the pantry, freezer, or refrigerator, restocking your baking and decorating supplies, or tidying and organizing your kitchen cupboards and drawers, your future crazed holiday self will thank you.

Refresh your home in Sacramento County

By making a few fall resets now, you can ensure that your holiday season will be less stressful and more enjoyable. Your wardrobe and home will be ready for the festivities! If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of making any of these resets on your own, consider having a friend, family member, or professional organizer assist you.
