Winter Farmers’ Markets in Sacramento + A Guide to Seasonal Produce

As the nation’s Farm-to-Fork Capital, Sacramento is surrounded by farms, orchards, ranches, and vineyards. Locals are proud of their agricultural heritage, as evidenced by the number of farm-to-table restaurants and farmers’ markets found here. But just because the weather is a bit grim doesn’t mean we have to wait until spring to enjoy the bounty of the region. There are numerous year-round farmers’ markets throughout the area where you can find the freshest fruits, vegetables, herbs, flowers, nuts, and other gourmet food products.

Even in winter, the greater Sacramento area grows some amazing produce. From winter fruits to cold-weather veggies, there’s always something new at the farmers’ market. Following is a brief guide to what you’ll find in late winter and early spring:

Fruits

  • Citrus. Did you know Placer County is known for its mandarins? There are more than a dozen mandarin farms here, many of them in Newcastle. Other seasonal citrus varieties that thrive in Sacramento’s Mediterranean-like climate include navel and Valencia oranges, lemons and Meyer lemons, limes, kumquat, grapefruit and more.
Vegetables

  • Asparagus. Asparagus begins making an appearance in early spring. Look for both white and green varieties.
  • Artichokes. Another early spring veggie, artichokes are usually available in March.
  • Leafy greens. Winter greens include kale, chard, and spinach.
  • Broccoli & cauliflower. Although it’s available year-round, broccoli and cauliflower are best in winter.
  • Root vegetables. Carrots, beets and radishes are at their peak this time of year.

Farmers’ Market Tips

  • Bring small bills. Although some vendors accept electronic payments, cash is usually preferred. But vendors don’t always have change, so bring small bills.
  • Leave your pets at home. Most markets prohibit dogs and other pets due to health codes.
  • BYOB. Bring your own bag. Reusable shopping bags are eco-friendly and are easier to carry.
  • Go hands-free. Consider wearing a fanny pack or crossbody bag. It’s easier to shop when you have both hands free.
  • Do not haggle. Unless you are buying huge quantities, it’s not acceptable to haggle with vendors for a discount.
  • Be gentle. Much of the produce sold in farmers’ markets is tree-ripened and therefore, delicate. Squeezing it can cause damage.
  • Ask questions. Most vendors would be happy to tell you about their farms or offer samples of their products — just ask!
  • Go early. Or late. The early bird gets the worm, and in the case of farmers’ markets, the early bird gets the first pick of the best produce. But, if you’re looking for a deal, go late. Many vendors offer discounts towards the end of the day.
