Spooktacular Sacramento: A Guide to Halloween Events for All Ages

October has arrived, and hopefully by now you’ve indulged in plenty of pumpkin spice everything, enjoyed the falling leaves and perhaps even planned to visit Apple Hill. Fall vibes are in full swing, but before you know it, those vibes are going to turn a bit more macabre. Halloween is just weeks away, so now is the time to start getting spooky. Ghosts and skeletons are already making their appearances on front porches and many people are starting to think about plans for the upcoming holiday.

The greater Sacramento area has plenty of attractions and activities for those looking to get into the Halloween spirit. There are alleged haunted places in Sacramento home to actual apparitions! In fact, you can take a Ghost Tour and learn all about the city’s morbid past with a walk through Old Sacramento. Otherwise, if you’re looking to cross over to the dark side, consider these haunted houses, theme parks and not-so-scary community events for families that are scheduled through October.

For Adults & Teenagers

Sacramento Scream Park | North Highlands

Located in North Highlands, this haunted attraction is actually four themed haunted houses in one, including a haunted schoolhouse and asylum. There’s also a “Frightmare Midway” with snacks and boutiques, and of course, plenty of costumed scare actors. They also offer behind-the-scenes tours. Not recommended for children under 12. 

Golfland Sunsplash Fright Nights | Roseville

Golfland Sunsplash in Roseville has transformed itself into the Gauntlet Haunted House to bring visitors a night of inescapable terror. Ground-breaking special effects, animatronics and skilled actors make up the terrifying maze of horror. If you’re looking for something a bit more tame for younger kids (or scaredy cats), the mini golf course has been spookified for the season. Haunted house not recommended for children under 13.

Corbett’s House of Horror | Davis

The Fear Farm is back at this long-running haunted horror show in Davis! The 15-acre attraction includes several haunts, including a Scarecrow Corntrail and Zombie Paintball Attack. Live actors, meticulous set design and pro-level FX means it’ll be a night to remember. All ages are welcome, but it may not be suitable for young children.

Heartstoppers Haunted House | Rancho Cordova

This immersive experience in Rancho Cordova is sure to get your heart pounding! Every corner of the multi-house maze is filled with monsters, zombies and other freaky figures. Creepy alleyways are filled with vendors selling all kinds of macabre wares, from dark art to creepy dolls. There are also live bands and food vendors. Not recommended for children under 13.

Nite Terrors Haunted House | Auburn

An airborne parasite has gotten loose at a research laboratory, leaving violent zombies in its wake. So goes the terrifying tale at this haunted house in Auburn, held Friday and Saturday nights through October, which has terrifying sets, costumed actors and plenty of jump scares! Not recommended for children under 12. 

Haunted Forest | Winters

Located on 30 acres of dense natural forest on the bank of Putah Creek in Winters, this eerie experience features theatrical scenes and mystical creatures. Before the sun goes down, you can bring the kiddos for Twilight Hour for fun forest activities and to meet the friendly creatures. But after sunset, the ghouls come out! Best of all, the forest is adjacent to Green River Taproom, so you can grab a bite to eat before or after. Outside of Twilight Hour, not recommended for children under 12. 

Zombie Walk & Halloween Faire | Citrus Heights

Why be a spectator when you can be a participant? This Oct. 14 event in Citrus Heights invites you to dress up in your favorite blood-splattered zombie-like clothing and join other like-minded ghouls for a walk at Sunrise Mall. There’s live entertainment, non-live entertainment (including a “brain” eating contest), an interactive “Thriller” dance, and local vendors. All ages welcome, but events are geared toward adults.

For Families & Younger Kids

Fog Willow Farms | Wilton

If your little one is an animal lover, this working farm in Wilton is a great place to get into the Halloween vibe. There’s a petting zoo, hay rides, and a pumpkin patch, and the property is decked out in seasonal décor. There’s a giant haystack for climbing, and pony rides on weekends. 

Safe & Super Halloween at Fairytale Town | Sacramento

Fairytale Town in Sacramento’s Land Park neighborhood is hosting four days of family-friendly fun this Halloween season! Now in its 37th year, the event will be held from 5–9 p.m. on Oct. 14–15 and Oct. 21–22. It includes hands-on activities, a costume parade, and live performances, including a puppet show and magic show.

Halloween at Hagan | Rancho Cordova

Rancho Cordova pulls out all the stops at its annual Halloween bash at Hagan Community Park. Held Saturday, Oct. 28, the event includes a zombie run, trunk-or-treat, carnival games, and live music. There will also be plenty of food and drink vendors as well. Plus, your kiddos can burn off all that sugar on an obstacle course and bounce houses! 

Halloween Spooktacular | El Dorado Hills 

If you’re looking for a safe alternative to trick-or-treating, this event in El Dorado Hills has got you covered. Held in the Town Center, participating businesses transform their spaces into a Halloween haven to pass out treats to little ones. There’s even a costume contest. The event is scheduled from 3–6 p.m. on Oct. 31.

Zombie Bike Ride | Davis

This beloved free event in downtown Davis welcomes everyone — adults, kids, and dogs — to dress up and take to the streets. From 12–3 p.m. on Oct. 29, wear your favorite zombie (or other) costume and join others to ride along the Davis Bike Loop. Afterward, skydiving zombies will fall from the sky at Community Park, and there’ll be a free Zombie Mash Afterparty with BMX riders, fire dancers, and food and drink vendors. Can’t make it? Bring your littles along the trick-or-treat trail in downtown on Oct. 31 from 2:30–5:30 p.m.
