After all the traveling during the holidays has passed, it’s fun to look forward to another exciting wintery trip — one that isn’t too far from home. Sacramento is centrally located near several destinations that are popular during every season — like the Bay Area, Lake Tahoe and other quaint coastal towns.

This winter, make reservations at these cozy getaway resorts and cabins scattered throughout the area. You’ll feel like you’ve escaped to a winter wonderland!

1. Mendocino

Distance from Sacramento: 4 Hours

Mendocino is a coastal oasis known for its natural beauty. It hosts a collection of Victorian villages residing along the coastline, picturesque vineyards and towering redwood forests. In fact, this charming town was included amongst Frommer’s lists of the Best Places to Go in 2016! If you haven’t yet been, you simply must add Mendocino to your 2017 bucket list. The best part about all of this? Mendocino is just under 4 hours away, which makes it doable for a weekend getaway.

2. Calistoga in Napa Valley

Distance from Sacramento: 1 Hour, 45 Minutes

Sacramento’s proximity to Napa Valley is something else we take advantage of — for a quick day trip, or an entire weekend spent in this vineyard haven. Calistoga is a quaint and charming town in the Napa Valley region known for its amazing collection of hot springs spas. In fact, the Calistoga area has been a hot springs destination for over 150 years, as it was considered a place of healing called “Coo-lay-no-maock” or “the oven place” by the local Wappo Indians. You’re also surrounded by an abundance of vineyards, boutique shops, and wonderful restaurants in Calistoga.

Mount View Hotel & Spa

Take it all in with a stay at Mount View Hotel & Spa. Their relaxing accommodations come in all shapes and sizes — including winery artist cottages, which feature a queen bed with a private patio and jacuzzi tub. You’ll experience the ultimate in relaxation and comfort during your stay at this historic hotel. Mount View Hotel & Spa has been serving Calistoga for over 100 years and is even a registered landmark with the National Registry of Historic Places.

3. Sausalito

Distance from Sacramento: 1 Hour, 30 Minutes

You’ll feel like you’ve escaped from it all with a visit to Sausalito, but you’ll still be able to access the excitement of San Francisco in a matter of minutes. This charming Bay Area community attracts visitors and new residents all year long, but can be particularly tranquil during the winter. You’ll love cozying up at a local pub or bistro, escaping to the spa, and enjoying the amazing scenery of the area — including views of the Golden Gate bridge.

Cavallo Point Lodge is a wonderful place to stay in Sausalito as this former military base is full of history and charm. In fact, you can stay in a historic guest room that were formerly officers’ residences located on expansive green space with hillside or San Francisco skyline views. Or you can opt for Cavallo Point’s contemporary lodging, which combine environmental sensitivity with modern style and offer sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay.

4. South Lake Tahoe

Distance from Sacramento: About 2 Hours

South Lake Tahoe is a popular vacation destination no matter what the weather forecast is. During the winter, there are so many activities you can enjoy in and around the Sierra Mountains, such as skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling or ice skating. And for those who would rather cozy up by the fire, bundle up to go shopping or simply take in your beautiful surroundings, this is an ideal destination for you as well!

Postmarc Hotel & Spa Suites

Postmarc Hotel & Spa Suites is located in the heart of activity near the lake, and is within a short distance of several restaurants, shops and other Tahoe South attractions. But you’ll have a hard time leaving your room while you’re staying at Postmarc due to their attractive contemporary decor that reflects the resort’s rustic surroundings in a tasteful way. This is an incredible place to stay during a visit to this popular area!

5. Cabins Off the Beaten Path

If you’re willing to venture into the less traveled roads of the area, you might consider staying in a log cabin or going on a “glamping” excursion with your loved one or family.
