The Ice is Open

We might not all be able to make it to the world-class ski resorts in the Sierra this winter, but we can still enjoy a bit of winter wonderland. A handful of ice rinks are open throughout the Sacramento area, giving skaters and cold-weather revelers a unique way to truly experience the season.

The Historic Folsom Ice Rink is open seven days a week through January 18, including Thanksgiving and Christmas day. Located in the historic district, this open-air seasonal rink is one of the region’s holiday highlights.

The Galleria in Roseville welcomes shoppers with an outdoor rink nestled among some of the center’s more popular restaurants and patio areas. There are open and family skate sessions, as well as Friday evening music with Jack FM. The Galleria rink is scheduled to stay open through January 17.

Downtown Sac’s Holiday Ice Rink is local favorite. Located on K Street, the venue is conveniently near Macys and the Esquire IMAX Theatre for all-day adventures. Skate rentals are free with a receipt from a downtown restaurant on Tuesdays from 4 to 8 p.m. Santa will be on hand December 11 & 18.

Originally opened in 1940, the Iceland Rink is Sacramento’s oldest. It’s coming back strong as a seasonal venue after a fire in 2010. It offers skating lessons for kids, teens, and adults, as well as hockey and broomball sessions. Iceland is scheduled to close for the season sometime in February or March.

Roseville’s Skatetown is the one rink that gives area residents the opportunity to skate all year long, however a seasonal outdoor rink is open through the holidays. Skatetown is home to two NHL-sized rinks and offers skate and hockey lessons.
