Mulch to Retain Moisture in the Garden

Many Californians have been turning to low-water plants and water-wise landscaping this year to do their part in saving the state’s precious water supply. Another effective and much-used tactic is using mulch.

Essentially a protective layer of material that is spread on top of the soil, mulching is an extremely effective way to maintain soil moisture and insulate the roots from heat and cold. It also minimizes the need to weed, protects soil from erosion, and provides a more finished and organized look to the garden.

Mulches come in a variety of materials and can conveniently be found right in the yard (lawn clippings, pine needles). Any organic mulch, fallen leaves, bark, or straw, will actually work to improve the soil. Using compost will improve soil structure and provide nutrients for plants.
