Quick and Easy Summer Improvements

We all have the best intentions during the summer months, to use the long days and extra down time to tackle some home upgrades. Unfortunately those daunting renovations and overhaul seem to get put off well into September. The key to getting it done? Create a manageable list of small things that make a big difference.

Focus on container gardening –Beds and full-blown vegetable gardens can be overwhelming. Go small. Create clusters of unique containers with tomatoes, herbs, and flowers.

Create a playground – Build something fun. Designate a section of the yard and groom it for horseshoes, croquet, or bocce. Not enough space? Hang a tire swing.

Paint a room – Or a wall. A fresh coat of paint does wonders for a space of any size. Not enough time or drive to do a whole room? Create an accent wall.

Caulking  – It’s always overlooked but makes a world of difference in energy efficiency. This should include electrical wiring, plumbing, attics, basements, and crawl spaces.

Create a border – Redefine a patio, walkway or yard area with borders. Pavers and stones are easy to deal with and make a world of difference. You can even create a small wall with concrete blocks.

Add a headboard – A new headboard can be easily (and inexpensively) created and brings a whole new feel to the bedroom.

Clean and seal the deck – Add years to the life of your deck by power washing and sealing at least every other summer.

Add fire – Outdoor fireplaces and fire pits are showing no signs of loosing their cool. Their popularity began a few years ago and continues to grow every year.

Clean the gutters – If you think summer goes fast, fall goes even quicker. Clean the gutters long before there’s any chance of rain.
