How to Find a House Sitter

It’s officially vacation season. And while we may all be eager to get out of town, it might be worth taking a moment to make sure our homes and belongings are secure and well taken care of in our absence.

House sitters can generally be hired, either to make daily visits, or stay overnight for the duration of your travels. It truly depends on your needs, as well as finances. Pet owners may wish to have someone on hand to spend quality time with their animals. Others may want their plants, yard, and landscaping impeccably maintained.

Rates will vary depending on the home and duties expected, but can start as low as $20 per day/night. Payment and daily responsibilities should be clearly outlined before departure. As a homeowner, you should make sure there are plenty of necessary supplies (cleaning equipment, pet food, cat litter, etc.) and instructions (pet meds, mail pick up, times for watering, days of garbage removal, etc).

There are several referral companies and websites that help locate house sitters in particular areas, but that doesn’t always make them reliable. Friends, family, and neighbors are an excellent resource for finding someone trustworthy and responsible. Younger adults, college students, retirees, and divorcees often make suitable candidates or options.

The most important part in the selection of a house sitter is trust, which generally comes in the form of familiarity and/or references. Make sure to call past clients or friends and family to ensure your leaving your home in good hands.
