Break out the Bikes in May

If you’re not already an avid cyclist, then May is the time to expand your mobility options. Whether commuting around town or just for simple recreation, the options for learning more and tapping the pulse of the region’s cycling opportunities are plentiful during May’s Bike Month.

The Sacramento area is already a haven for bike riders. Sunset Magazine recently named the American River Trail one of the West’s top city rides and Davis is known nationally for its headway in bike infrastructure. Head east, and the Sierra Foothills beckon with scenic and challenging mountain rides. The region is also a favorite on the professional scene, as Sacramento is a regular stage for the AMGEN Tour. The tour launches from the Capitol Mall May 10.

Events held throughout the month include Bike with the Mayor in Roseville May 2; Bicycle Flea Market May 3 at Patriot Bicycles in Citrus Heights; 11th Annual Capitol BikeFest May 14; Davis Ride of Silence May 20; Women on Wheels MTB Ride in Folsom every Friday; the Sierra Century in Amador County May 30; the Wildest Ride in the West/Auburn Century (taking riders more than 140 miles through the foothills) May 31; and Ride for a Reason, an Oakland-to-Sac ride to support public education May 16.

Various bike maintenance classes and clinics also take place throughout the region.
