Sacramento Antique Faire Offers Eclectic Treasures

If you haven’t been to the Sacramento Antique Faire, you are missing out on a quintessential Sacramento experience.

Held the second Sunday of every month (rain or shine!), the Faire host 300-plus vendors from around the region featuring assorted wares and treasures – albeit some is more junk than antique, but that’s all part of the experience.

My strategy is to start with at the back as all the over-priced vendors are near the front entrance at 21 and X Streets. I typically arrive at 7 a.m. to get my pick of the best vintage items. Some of my greatest finds have been authentic Mid-Century Modern twin beds and a sketch from American painter Mary Cassatt.

I’ve also picked up a 1970s slipper chair and a 1900s Victorian side chair that I’m reupholstering with great satisfaction, and a $15 watercolor painted by an unknown artist that I proudly hung above my fireplace mantle.

Some of my favorite items are the ones I don’t buy, including a 1950s pink Maytag washing machine, antique phone switchboard and a 1920s coffin (yes, coffin!).

Another tip – never pay the asking price. Negotiating is all part of the fun and is expected among vendors. Because the Faire is held under the freeway – literally – it can be chilly in the early morning. Wear layers and plan to peel as the day heats up.
