Herb Gardens
A Gateway to Gardening and Fresh Flavor
Not everyone can have a green thumb, but an herb garden is an easy (and economical) way to dabble in gardening while providing you with the opportunity to liven up your meals. And even though there is still time to benefit from the warm weather, you can start herbs nearly anytime of the year with an indoor herb garden then transfer them outside – adding dimension and diverse scents to your garden.
When creating an indoor herb garden, keep in full sun and water sparingly (touch the soil to monitor moisture, slightly damp, but never dry and crackly). There’s also plenty of room for creativity in your containers, just make sure there are small holes on the bottom for drainage.
The most hearty and versatile herbs are basil (perfect on pasta and pizza and the key ingredient to pesto); cilantro (Asian and Latin dishes, as well as a staple in salsa); parsley (mild flavor, adds color to dishes), and mint (a go-to for teas, desserts, cocktails, and veggies). Thyme is another favorite, and great to have handy in the winter for soups and stews, as well as seafood and poultry. Sage does well in stuffing and tomato sauces.
