From Shaker to Shabby Chic – “Antiques” are In

Antique shopping used to conjure images of highbrow collectors looking to accent stuffy museum-esque homes, but today’s savvy and stylish homeowners have embraced the “old is new” mentality. With “upcycling” replacing Ikea (partnered with Pintrest’s crafty guidance), more and more people are browsing second-hand shops and antique fairs for that perfect piece to complete their home.

For starters, it’s a good thing we’re in Northern California, because the Sacramento Antiques Faire is a must-stop location for those looking for goods from bygone eras. Featuring the wares of more than 300 vendors from across the west, the faire takes place the second Saturday of the month in downtown Sacramento throughout the year.

Further east is Denio’s Farmers’ Market and Swap Meet in Roseville, which has been around for six decades. It’s more of a one-stop shopping for all your needs, with antiques, second-hand goods, as well as toys, clothing, electronics, and seasonal fruits and veggies for sale.

Later this month, on May 18, downtown Auburn holds its Spring Antiques Street Faire. With more than 200 vendors, this gathering has everything from “jewels to junk.” If nothing tickles your fancy this month, their fall faire is October 19.

 As most antique-goers know, the best treasures are often unexpected. If you happen to be visiting an upscale or funky city or neighborhood make a point to stop into a consignment store or local Salvation Army. They receive goods from an entirely different clientele.
